To: WL From: "Kathy E. Gill" Subject: Day Five : OK, I found it - prologue Cc: Bcc: PE X-Attachments: The hot weather, that is. Yipes! That plus my constant invisible friend, The Wind, kept me company much of the day. At one point on I-70, with a strong, constant wind from my right so I was in heavy lean, I took a gust that felt like it was going to body slam me into the freeway - knock the tires right out from under me. It didn't - but it sure as hell felt like it. The day's "stumble" was when the bike wouldn't start at Arch's National Park - at the Windows, if anyone knows where that is. I called Herb (SeaDuc service mgr) before pulling off the gear - to tell him that the *parking* lights worked. Only the "on" switch didn't. I was afraid it was the switch. He had no suggestions. Pulled the gear (I've figured out how to do this and keep the tent, etc on the back rack -- and I also have figured out why BB has his pack on the back rack - this is a Short Seat!). Did the "fuse" thing again - nada. Called Herb back (yes, I like the USWest tri-mode phone - Arch's NP is in the middle of NOWHERE, Utah). "Is there a way to hot-wire this bike?" He tells me to look at the starter relay -- I wiggle it. Nothing. Bend down - ah, there's the problem. The wires that plug *into* the starter relay plug "up" into the "bottom" of the relay. They had vibrated out. Still don't know why playing with the fuses worked, except the two pieces are tied together. Wiggling one worked the other one, before, I guess. I duct taped the wires around the relay and frame. Am in Grand Junction CO - odo reads 4763. Nine hours from start to finish today (440 miles). But the hot weather and wind conspired to make me almost as tired as Sunday. To bed now - more later. Kathy on digest FAIAP postponed
