"The Red Badge of Courage" and other stories,
Stephen Crane
You were probably required to read "Red Badge..." in school, but
Crane has some other interesting works too. His light burned very
bright, and very briefly (Crane was 28 or 29 when he died). As a
result, you can usually find his entire collected work in one
novel-sized book. His stories about being shipwrecked off the coast of
Florida during the Spanish-American War are vaunted short story
classics, and I also found his barrio (sp?) stories about Maggie and
others in 19th Century NYC quite intriguing.

A good collection of Mark Twain short stories,
Samuel Clemens
Short stories are, IMO, the finest form of lit today. Almost anyone
can build a rich character and story in 200 pages, but the writer who
can do it in 5-20 pages is a master. And Twain was (again, IMO) the
Master's Master. Best of all, you can read an entire story in one
sitting. A favorite that comes to mind is "The Great Landslide Case."
